Protists are powerful in their ability to adapt to many habitats, photosynthesize, form symbiotic relationships, and more. And to think that most of them are so small we cannot even see them! Protists are an important part of the food chain, they make oxygen for us to breathe, and they are used in medicines and scientific studies. But they are a peculiar group, in that they are such a diverse group of organisms. Many of them don’t really have anything in common other than not fitting into one of the other kingdoms of living things. Basically anything that doesn’t fit into the plant, animal, fungi, bacteria or archaea kingdoms is classified as a protist. Protists belong to the kingdom Protista, which includes living things that are both unicellular (one cell) and multi-cellular. These include species of algae, amoebas, euglena, protozoans, water molds and slime molds.
