Scat! Most people avoid it, run away from it, tell their kids to leave it alone and get away. But scat is actually interesting, something that can be explored and investigated. Like tracks, scat has a story to tell. Do you want to read it? Scat can tell us many things. Animal species have unique prints, but they also have unique poop. By looking at the scat in an area, you can learn what animals spend time there as well as what types of foods they have eaten. Often animals that eat meat have more tube-shaped scat, with hair and/or bones visible. Plant-eaters more often have pellet-shaped poop, and you may be able to see seeds inside. How dry or wet the scat is can indicate its freshness or whether the animal was in the area recently. Sometimes animals use scat to mark their territory, which could mean the animal spends a lot of time there. You can also get an idea of the animal’s size by the size of the poop.
