When you think of leaves what comes to mind? Do you picture the stately oak leaf, the easily recognizable maple? Do you think of beautifully colored leaves falling to the ground in autumn? I know you aren’t thinking of the pointy, sharp needles that cover conifers and stay green all year. But these, too, are leaves! Many conifers have needle-like leaves such as pines, spruces, and firs. Others may have more scale-like leaves that are flattened and softer. Either way, they are very different from broad leaves. Their shape may seem strange to us, but they are perfectly adapted for evergreen duty.
